Biography

We do not know the surname of Dorothy, the wife of John Thompson of East Haven. She later married Thomas Harrison. Dorothy and John Thompson had 7 children: Hannah, John, Mary, Joseph, Abigail, Rebecca, and Sarah.[1]

Dorothy's 1619 birth date is an estimate based on the birth years of her children. She died before 29 March 1666 when her second husband was remarried.[2]

There is sometimes confusion about her name being Ellen rather than Dorothy. According to Donald Lines Jacobson[3]: "The earlier generations of the Thompson families of East Haven and New Haven have been confused, and the published accounts are inaccurate without exception. The principal reason for this is that three John Thompsons in succession flourished in each family. Furthermore, considerable confusion has arisen with regard to their wives, due to the fact that John, Sr., of New Haven married Ellen Harrison, while the widow of the first John of East Haven married Thomas Harrison for her second husband. Consequently, Ellen has been assigned indiscriminately to three separate Johns." That Jacobus article then goes on to give details about the two families involved.

See also this information from Dorothy's husband's profile: There were two John Thompsons in New Haven, Connecticut in the early 1600’s, each with a daughter named Mary. This has led to some confusion. Donald Lines Jacobus in his “Families of Ancient New Haven” named them Family 1 and Family 3. See Vol VII, pages 1749 – 1750. Family 1: John Thompson was married to Ellen Harrison the daughter of Richard Harrison. Their daughter was Mary Thompson who married Samuel Lines, John Hitchcock, and Samuel Clark. John and Ellen also had 4 other daughters: Anne, Elizabeth, Lydia, and Sarah. Family 3: John Thompson was married to Dorothy ____. Their daughter was Mary Thompson who married John Cooper. John and Dorothy had 6 other children: Hannah, John, Joseph, Abigail, Rebecca, and Sarah. Just to confuse things further, there was also a John Thompson from Stratford, Connecticut.

Hello Kay, I have a document on my ancestry saying this Dorothy is Ellen Harrison Thompson. Being the mother of Mary Thompson Cooper.

If you check my profile you will notice I am having problems and if you do a connection finder from yourself to each of these names! Truesdale-314 and Bancroft-37 and Cooper-326.... then notice the connection from Truesdale-314 to Cooper-326 So I think something is amiss I am a descendant from Truesdale and my mother being a Bancroft is where I have connections on ancestry. Unfortunately I have hit my brick walls on Wikitree.

Hi Cliff,

I've added more information to this profile to explain how the name Ellen has inappropriately been confused with her actual name Dorothy. Please let me know if you feel that it's still unclear.

I don't believe your other comments are related to the wife of John Thompson and Thomas Harrison. I'll send you a private message to address them.

This profile shows her marriage to John Thompson in 1669, but John died in 1656 and Dorothy died in 1666, so the 1669 marriage date is impossible and has been removed.

The wife of John Thompson-23336 was Dorothy Unknown. Her parents were not George Vickery-830 and Rebecca Phipper-1, so those parents have been detached in preparation for merging this profile with Unknown-40679.

Unknown-279633 and Unknown-40679 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband and death. I would use the @1619 birth, noting the other in the bio. I don't think there can be a specific date, without knowing who the parents were or her surname.
