Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah Tomlinson was born in Pennsylvania in 1810. She was the daughter of Joseph Tomlinson and Elizabeth Twining. The Tomlinson family joined the Quaker exodus to Ohio before 1815.

Hannah married Timothy Haines, the son of Isaac Haines and Sarah Kirk, in Harrison County, Ohio on 1 October 1829. Timothy was also a Quaker, and both attended Short Creek Monthly Meeting, Ohio, but the couple chose to marry outside the care of Monthly Meeting. The process for a Quaker marriage could be a lengthy one, and couples often chose to forgo it. Hannah condemned her marriage contrary to discipline at Short Creek Monthly Meeting on 20 May 1830, after which they were members in good standing. The family received a certificate of transfer to Stillwater Monthly Meeting, Barnsville, Ohio on 22 November 1838.

On 21 October 1854, Hannah and Timothy requested to be released from Stillwater Monthly Meeting, and they joined the Spiritualists. They ultimately settled in West Grove, Jay County, Indiana.

Hannah and Timothy had six children, who were:

  • Elizabeth Twining Haines (1830-1870), m. Lorenzo Lewis;
  • Joel Haines (1831-bf 1840);
  • Joseph T Haines (1833-1922), m. Mary Lunissa Jordan;
  • Isaac T Haines (1835-1917), m. Mary Elma Gray;
  • Edwin J Haines (1841-1870), m. Lydia Ann Wright; and
  • Mary Caroline Haines (1845-1845).

Timothy died in Jay County, Indiana on 15 April 1860. Hannah married 2nd Hervey Lewis. Hervey was also a Quaker who left to join the Spiritualists. He was hit by a train and died while visiting (or possibly, living with) his daughter in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1892. Hannah lived another 10 years, dying in 1902 at the age of 92. She is said to have been buried in West Grove Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana, but no headstone has been discovered.
