Biography

Thomas Van Dorn “Tommy” Tomlinson was born February 8,1891 near Grenola, Kansas, the third son of Robert Tomlinson and Alphreda Mary Wilson. When the United States entered WW I, Thomas enlisted in June 1917 in ‘B’ Battery, 129th Field Artillery, 35th Division. He trained at Camp Doniphan near Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He sailed to France on the Saxonia May 20, 1918. Thomas participated in the offensive at Vosges Sector, St Mihiel, Meuse Argonne and Verdun. He received his honorable discharge in May 1919. The following year, he enrolled at Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery. He married Lulu McCracken on December 16, 1924. She was the daughter of C.C. and Julia McCracken of Elkton, Missouri. Thomas received his degrees in May 1925. Thomas did not practice medicine, but worked at the Kansas City Journal Post as District Supervisor, Circulation. He was employed there until his death at age 44 on July 31,1935. Thomas was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He and Lulu did not have children.

Research Note

The RMS Saxonia was a Cunard passenger liner, requisitioned by Great Britain on and off during WW I. Saxonia made one voyage with Canadian troops, disembarking in Liverpool; after that it was moored in the Thames and employed as POW accommodations. Between May 1915 and October 1916, she returned to Cunard service. In 1917, Saxonia was requisitioned again to carry troops and cargo between Liverpool and New York. At war’s end, the ship transported American troops home from France to New York; Saxonia was returned to commercial service after April 1919.
