Biography

Eliza (Smith) Malone is a part of US Black heritage.

Eliza was born about 1861. She was the daughter of Moses and Martha Smith.^{[1] [2]}Eliza was a school teacher in Fayette Co., Georgia prior to her marriage to Turner Malone. Eliza was the second wife of Turner R. Malone. Turner's first wife Hannah passed away while giving birth to their daughter Luella. Eliza and Turner had seven children.

After Eliza's husband died, she went back and forth between Chatanooga, Tennessee and Rome, Georgia for about a year. After spending time in Newton, Georgia, Atlanta Georgia, Lexington Kentucky, she returned to Chatanooga.

In 1910 she was living with her daughter Emma and her family in Hamilton County, Tennessee. She passed away in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was buried in her parent's cemetery plot in Newnan, Coweta Co., Georgia^[3]

Eliza married Farmer Malone on 4 January 1877 in Coweta, Georgia, United States.^[4]

1880 census Turner (age 33), Farm Hand, was the married head of household in District 1293, Fayette, Georgia, United States.^[5]

1880 census Lizar (age 22), House Keeping, was the wife of Turner Malone in District 1293, Fayette, Georgia, United States.^[6]

Eliza was listed as a widow [penciled in after his death in 1908] in Turner "Buck" Malone's U.S., Civil War Pension record, June 9,1889 (Invalid cert. 754.856, GA) Class was marked invalid since he was still living. After her husband died, she applied for a widow's pension on 7 of March 1910 (751.570, GA) Class stated as widow. 1900 census Eliza (age 39), Wash Woman, was the wife of Turner Malone in Rome Ward 1, Floyd, Georgia.^[8]

Tennessee

1910 census Eliza (age 49) was the widowed mother-in-law of Sherman Fields and her daughter Emma, in Civil District 6, Hamilton, Tennessee, United States.^[9]

Ohio

In the 1920 census Eliza (age 50) was the married mother of Cleve Malone, her son, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. (Note--this woman is not Eliza Smith Malone. More research is needed to determine who she is. Lisa)^[10]

Death

Turner's pension records show Eliza died in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Georgia A. Greer was living with her Uncle Ira and Grandmother Isabella in 1880. This means that Isabella could be Martha Smith's mother. Other records establish Casey Smith as being Moses' mother.

Mr. Peter Smith (white) knew Eliza her whole life. Peter F. Smith was too young to have been Eliza's slave owner. Peter's father, John Hardaway Smith may have been her slave owner.
