Biography

This profile is part of the Smith Name Study.
Beloved son and brother. Faithful husband. Affectionate father. Wise teacher. Frequent goofball. Resilient Christian who ran his race with endurance, bravely battling cancer to the end.

John Lucian Smith was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on October 18, 1952, the second son of Rev. John Thomas Smith (1924-2009) and June (Kraybill) Smith (1924-2002). He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of five. He grew up in Pennsylvania and Maryland with his brothers, Dave and Steve.

In 1970, John started college at Georgia Tech, but he transfered to Bob Jones University a year later due to a commitment of his life to God's will. In 1975, he graduated from BJU with a degree in math education. After college, he moved to Denver, Colorado to become a math and physics teacher at Silver State Baptist School.

John married Nancy Flower on June 29, 1974. They had three children: Nathan, Andrea, and Kari.

In 1984, John accepted a position with Electronic Data Systems, which moved his family first to Atlanta, then to Detroit, and finally to Indianapolis. In each city, John became actively involved in a local church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, AWANA leader, choir member, and youth leader.

At the age of 17, John had been diagnosed with lymph cancer. No treatments were able to keep the cancer at bay for more than a few years, thus he spent much of his adult life battling the dreaded disease. Yet despite the long periods of suffering caused by chemotherapy, John's faith in God's goodness did not waver. He trusted that God knew what was best for him and his family. He knew that God could be glorified even in his death.

On June 6, 1996, John went home to be with the Lord. He was 43 years old.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
