I’m trying again to find anyone who may have knowledge of the Simmons family in early 1800 Montgomery County,Ohio; or in Shelby or Barthalomew counties in Indiana.

The big brick wall is behind Lafayette W Simmons, my husbands great grandfather. A photo copy of an old Family Bible, possibly his, lists birthdates of he and his wife, Mary Ellen Chambers ( 1842-1916, daughter of John Anson Chambers and Rachel Ann Smith of Bartholomew County Indiana). It also charts birth and death dates of all their children and grandchildren, who were living between 1872- 1920’s in Wright County Missouri. I have thoroughly searched records of all his descendants.

Lafayette W Simmons ( Simmons-5705) was born Mar 15, 1832 in Montgomery County, Ohio. I have Probate Records that show his indenture (as a poor boy) in 1839, and again in 1841 in Shelby County, Ohio. Those indentures were to Nathanial Albee, and then to Christopher Allen. He is found in the household of Christopher Allen in the US Fed Census 1850, in Shelby County. On Apr 11, 1857 he was married in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He served for the Union in the Civil War, then received a Land Grant in Wright County, MO. After the 1870 Census in Jackson, Shelby, Indiana, he and his family migrated to their new home near Hartville, Wright County, MO. From there the family scattered mostly to Tulsa, Oklahoma and then some to the West Coast.

The only other facts I have are not conclusive to even know where his parents were born, only that he probably knew who they were, and maybe had other relatives in Indiana. He claimed his father’s birthplace on one census as simply “Baden”, and on another as England. His mother was either born in Ohio or Indiana.

I can’t imagine that a young child could be indentured until the age of 18, with ample records; but without any record of him becoming a ward of the court, or of who the parents were.

I’ll be glad to help anyone with this Simmons line. Just hoping to discover Lafayette’s ancestors or siblings.

I added my step Great Grandmother Simmons lines to the Simmons name study. I saw two different spellings for her name. Simons and Simmons.

My maiden name is Simmons, so I have always wanted to know the most about this line of my heritage. So much of the relatively recent history is shrouded in mystery. For instance, my great grandfather, Elmer David Simmons, abandoned his family and we would like to solve the mystery of Elmer David. I am working my way backward, which is hard and having to piece together the clues, to make it out of Tennessee and slowly backward to my 3rd great grandfather, David L. Simmons in Wake County, NC (born in 1825).

My surname is Simmons. My family came from Virginia to North Carolina and then to Georgia, Alabama, and west. Their migration from North Carolina in Wake County took them to Putnam County in Georgia and to Harris County in Georgia. The descendants of my great great great grandfather are known to be in Georgia, Alabama, and Texas.
