Burrell Parkerson was born on Mar. 15, 1830 to Dr. Burrell Parkerson and Emma Parkerson. He was baptized on Apr. 10, 1830 at East Dereham, Norfolk, England. [1]
In 1851, Burrell and his brother Richard immigrated to New Zealand aboard the ISABELLA HERCUS.[2] The rest of the family followed, arriving on Oct. 18, 1853 aboard the JOHN TAYLOR.[3]
He bought 100 acres (about 40ha) of Sumner land for £300 and work began on a house the same year. The house was named "Wahi Ruru", meaning place of the morepork. The land was farmed for years and then sub-divided many times. The stone house was damaged by the September 2010 earthquake. The February 2015 quake fatally damaged the building, and it was demolished in December 2015. [4]
Burrell died of typhoid fever on May 2, 1875 at the Hospital in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand and was buried in the family plot at Barbados Cemetery in Christchurch.[5]
