Biography

John was born about 1848 in Oxfordshire, England. To date, his birth record has not been located, however John's son Edgar recorded his birth date as 1 April 1848.

The family legend is that he was born near the Four Shire Stone, a boundary marker that marks the place where the four historic English counties of Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, and Worcestershire once met.

Another family story was that John ran away from his trade, possibly an indentured apprenticeship, which was an offence at that time. John's sons Edgar and Harold both agreed with this story saying that he changed his name after running away. This theory has not yet been able to be confirmed.

By 1869, John was living in Kensal Town, London and working as a carman, a driver of a horse drawn vehicle delivering goods. On 16 May 1869, John married Ellen Jennings. On the marriage certificate, John gives his father's name as William Parker. He states that his father was deceased and that he was a farmer. [1]

John and Ellen's first child, John William, was baptised at Holy Trinity, Paddington, London on 3 July 1870. Interestingly, John gave his name as William on the baptismal register. At this time the family were living at 8 Golborne Terrace in Kensal Town with Ellen's younger brother Mark Jennings who is described as being their lodger and working as a tailor. [2] [3]

He passed away in 1920.
