Biography

Greg was born 8 Dec 1957 at McMillian hospital, Charleston (now demolished). He is the son of Ronald G. and Thelma Jean (Miller) Morris of Kanawha County, WV.

Greg spent his first few years on Oakwood Road in Charleston, and then moved with his parent's to a little starter home in the community of Sun Valley, out Pennsylvania Avenue in St. Albans, Kanawha, WV. Although he did not know it at the time, the small creek at the end of the sub-division - Indian Creek - was so-named because his Morris ancestors had a run-in with the Shawnee on that creek in the late 1700s. Small world.

He attended St. Albans High School, Marietta College (Ohio), W. V. State University, and Marshall University. He married Conni McGraw (of the Wyoming County McGraws) and fathered four daughters: Zoe (1981), Yoko (1983), Victoria Rose "Rosie" (1987), and Olivia (1989).

His second wife was Kathryn Elizabeth Woestman of Havertown, Delaware County, Philadelphia. Together they have a daughter Cordelia Katherine Morris.

Greg's siblings are Lisa Ann (Morris) Stamm (formerly Patton), and Stephen Barrett Morris (currently of Louisiana).

As of this writing, Greg and his family live in Huntington. He is a retired engineer, draftsman, and measurement and regulation inspector with Mountaineer Gas Company.

Approach to Sourcing

Assume nothing. Question everything. Don't just cut and paste the work of others (what's the fun in that?) Dig deep. Then deeper. Move a little left, then right, then up, then back, making sure the target is dead center. Take a deep, cleansing breath, then fire, but not until you're sure.

Most of the internet family trees are mainly right, sort of, and most of the resources are right, sort of, and most primary sources are right and proper - sort of. Sometimes they're wrong, and when they're wrong they're dead wrong. Bursting bubbles is one of the great joys of the true genealogist. Relish these discoveries.

My own view of sourcing is vastly different from the standard. I begins with the premise that the only true primary source is the event itself, and that transcends the spoken and written word. From there, the first thought is the secondary source - that is, the first conscious realization of an event by a human being. This is followed by the tertiary source, which would be sharing of the event, either orally or through writing, with others (this is what we're taught to think of as the "primary" source, which, of course, it's not.)

The fourth layer consists of the transcription of a written or oral record onto an unofficial document, then to an official document; next may come a poor copy of the official document, and so on and so on, until by the time it reaches our ears the "primary" source is often dozens of layers away. Even an eyes-on view of the earliest written source, such as a Will, is already clouded by time and erosion.

I presume these events are not related.  ;-)

Who knows? The hospital my mom & dad were born in is gone. Same with my grandparents. We may be bad luck.

Oh Nossss - I'm sure that's not the case.
It's time for the One Place Studies Project Check-In!

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hi Azure. I have stepped away from my OPS but only briefly. I should return to it in June.

I don’t know if I’ll sign up for the survey, since I’m giving try one more unknown entity my email address. Is there a way to avoid this?

posted by Gregory Morris
Hi, Greg!

No problem!

The survey is just in a google sheets document so should be fine, only the project leadership has access. I'll make a note that you've responded via comment.

Gregory -

We just started a new project on WikiTree: the Appalachia Project and we would love to have you join us. Since you are already working on profiles in Appalachia it wouldn't add to your WT work. Just a sticker and a category, here and there. To join, review the Project page, pick a regional team (or teams) and answer the G2G Membership post.

You’re a good egg for asking, Sandy. I might join, but I’m not really a sticker guy; I’m probably not good for much (although I have learned to add stickers to a OPS I’m working on.)

Hopefully someone will create an algorithm that can be used to place these stickers and categories automatically?

posted by Gregory Morris
Completely understand! Some love stickers, some don't, some don't want them.

I would love to have you on the Appalachia Project so we can add more ancestors to the shared global tree. Stickers = optional. :)

Come join us!

Hi Gregory thanks for replying to the check in. Your badge was added to your page 26 Dec 2019. My question is if you have been active in the project in the last six months. Secondly do you want to remain in the project?

Thanks Mary, but I don't see much point. Obviously it's not something I cared enough about to even remember I was in it. Good luck, though!

Thank you Gregory for replying to the Military and War Check in. The leader will remove the badge from your page. We value your contributions. If you find you are interested in Military and War, and want to rejoin, just go to g2g and reply to the posting there with an ANSWER.

Ok, thanks and good luck! I don't know much about the units of the Am. Rev. so if there are inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it'd be great to discuss it with the 1776 project!

"This is a curious addition to the family of James Steppe. Two daughters named Elizabeth born 13 years apart and both of their mothers unknown."

I agree. As far as the spouse of Gideon Anderson goes, no one knows who she was or who her parents were. Some say she was a distant cousin of Gideon from the Orson Martin/Susanna Ganaway family. Robert

Hi Gregory,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, coordinating with others is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Based on your biography the Huguenot Migration Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to review other possibilities. Read the goals and tasks of the projects and join those which are a good fit.

Hi Gregory,

A warm welcome to WikiTree. You are now a full member and can add your family to the big tree!

Click here to start with our New Member How-To Pages. They will save you time, energy and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Hope you enjoy WikiTree as much as I have. You never know when you will find a lost family member or ancestor. Or maybe find a hidden family secret about an ancestor. Genealogy to me is like being a detective looking for clues into the past.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile as the links will work from there.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm always happy to help!
