Research Notes

The following needs to be traced down to original sources: "Isaac Furman was born in New Jersey, probably in 1776, and his birthplace was most likely Mansfield Township, Sussex County (now Warren County). He was named for his maternal grandfather, Isaac Woolverton, Jr., Although his mother may have had also both of his treat-granfathers (Isaac Herrin and Isaac Woolverton, Senior) in mind. Isaac Furman was about 18 when his family moved to Pennsylvania, and he was married by 1800 to Catherine Moore, daughter of John and Asha Rea Moore. He first appears in the Census of 1800, and the first tax listing of Shamokin Township in 1802, when he is shown with 100 acres of land, with cabin and stable, 1 cattle, real value of $50.00, and personal value of $7.00. He was a farmer his entire life, on land adjacent to his brother, Daniel. In the Tax record for 1844, Isaac Furman is listed jointly with Gideon Roadarmel, his son-in-law, married to his daughter, Rachel, with total of 40 acres property. His name is crossed through on the 1845 tax list with notation “see John Furman, Sr.”, his son, indicating Isaac’s death in 1844 or early 1845. Since it cannot be proven exactly when he died, the year 1845 is selected since on 5 April 1845, his seven children sold the 40 acres of his property for $300.00, to Samuel Furman, a first cousin (Northumberland County Deed Book “EE”, page 306, dated 5 April 1845, recorded 16 June 1845). His wife, Catherine, was apparently deceased by 1840, as she is not enumerated in the National Census for that year. Some accounts indicate there were nine children, but only seven have been found by the compiler. The burial places of Isaac and Catherine Furman are not known but are most likely in the Irish Valley area."[2]
