Biography
Jonathan Merritt was born March 7, 1807 in North Carolina (possibly in the Sampson/Duplin County area). His parents are unknown at this time.
In 1850, he was found in Thomas County, Georgia with his wife Catherine and 6 children.[1] Catherine died after the 1850 census, and Jonathan then married Abigail Blackshear Welch, the widow of Richard Welch. Jonathan was a farmer and a shoe maker.
Jonathan died on November 22, 1882. He is buried in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Reno, Grady, Georgia.[2]
