Biography

Notables Project
William McCarty is Notable.

Records seem to agree that Billy was born sometime between September-November, 1859. But they disagree about the specifics.

Some researchers have claimed that William Henry McCarty was born at 210 Greene Street, New York City, on September 17, 1859. He was christened Henry McCarty on September 28, 1859 at the same church in which his parents had been married. His godparents were Thomas Cooney and Mary Clark.

The website www.aboutbillythekid.com disputes that information, saying: “Birth dates of November 20, 1859 and September 17, 1859 have popped up, but there's no proof or even a hint of these dates being accurate.”

Billy later adopted the surname Bonney. At various times he was also called Henry Antrim. But the name by which he was generally known was "Billy, The Kid"

At the age of 21 he was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett Patrick Floyd Garrett in 1881 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

Research Notes

Very few records conclusively identify Henry McCarty, aka Billy the Kid, and his location: New Mexico Territory Trial Records; witness at 1 March 1873 Santa Fe marriage of William Antrim and Catherine McCarty; 1880 census record of San Miguel County, NM, where Wm Bonny and Charles Bowdre are consecutive entries on a census page.

There is no solid documentation on Billy the Kid’s life prior to 1870. Prior to their marriage, land records, found by Waldo Koop in 1964, show that both William H Antrim and Catherine McCarty owned land in Wichita, Sedgwick County Kansas, in 1870 and 1871 (“Real West”, Nov 1978, Jack DeMattos”). In a sworn statement supporting Catherine’s purchase of 160 acres, William Antrim said Catherine was a single woman over the age of 21, head of a family consisting of two children, and a citizen of the United States.

It is widely accepted that Billy the Kid was born in New York. New York City is identified as the birthplace of William Bonney in “Authentic Life of Billy the Kid”. William Antrim, in his 1915 pension application, stated McCarty, the previous husband of his wife (Catherine McCarty), died in New York City. Jack DeMattos quoted research that indicated Billy the Kid was born in New York City to Patrick McCarty and Catherine Devine on 17 Sep 1859. The child was named Patrick Henry McCarty according to historian, William H. Carson, or Henry McCarty according to Rev. James B. Roberts of St. Peters Church. New York City directories list 210 Greene Street, Manhattan, as the residence of Patrick and Catherine McCarty.

There is only one widely recognized image of Billy the Kid. The provenance of the Dedrick daguerreotype of Billy the Kid standing beside his rifle is far more credible than other images said to be Billy the Kid. William Koch bought the Dedrick daguerreotype at auction in 2011 for $2.3 million dollars.

Hi a few years ago my father did a D N A test with 23andme. When his results came in they said my father was related to Billy the Kid . I have never looked into it.

So some of my mother's relatives have always believed that they were related to Billy the Kid, through the brother of my relative John McCarty [McCarty-5021] who emigrated to NYC on 09 JAN 1850 as a single laborer. There are some census records that show Catherine moved to Indiana and she is there living with her husband (Michael McCarty's) relatives. Catherine was listed in Indianapolis, IN city directory in 1867 and 1868 as the widow of Michael McCarty. 1880 census in Fort Sumner, New Mexico listed a Wm. Bonny (Henry's alias) as being 25 yrs old and working cattle. For references see the book by Bill Markey "Billy the Kid & Jesse James Outlaws of the Legendary West" 2019, pg4, references Mark Lee Gardner, "to Hell on a Fast Horse: Billy the Kid, Pat Garret, and the Epic Chase to Justice in the Old West", 2010 p36.

As a Note I was not able to connect to Billy the Kid through my mother's side in this Connection Finder but it connected me via my father's side! I dont think the profile is accurate as there are so many unknowns and when I was looking at the NYC information there are a LOT of McCarty / McCarthy's listed... None of which pointed clearly to William Henry McCarty's father as Michael or Patrick...

What is astonishing for any potential biographer is to realize that there is no agreement about Billy's parentage ancestry, his place of birth, and even the date and place of his death. No one can say with certainty when he came into this world, for his actual birth date remains open to debate. Although most historians concur that he was shot and killed by Pat Garrett in the New Mexico Territory on July 14th 1881, there have always been those who cannot agree on the facts of his demise.” https://www.newmexico.org/places-to-visit/regions/southeast/billy-the-kid-museum-in-fort-sumner/

I found a baptism record of him named Patrick Henry McCarty. Source: <ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_the_Kid#cite_note-10</ref>

What is his real name?

The McCarthy family shows up on the 1860 Census for New York Ward 1 District 1 Lines 34-37 of Page 176. Patrick's occupation is a day laborer. Patrick (30) and Catherine (29) are born in Ireland and Bridget (7) and Henry(1) are born in New York. Catherine doesn't have an occupation. Dwelling #325 family #1562

Since the information matches the McCarty family I would surmise that the census taker wrote what he thought was the correct spelling and after writing it wasn't inclined to change it if he was corrected.

I have found census takers rarely asked how to spell a name and many respondents had no idea of how to spell their last name any way. My 2nd great-uncle Ulis Lounsbury (1893-1985) told me that he spelt his last name ..bury and his brother used ..bery or ...berry. Both had to work on the farm and did not go to school for very long. A friend could not find her grandfather in a census. His last name was Neville. A line-by-line search shows Nibble. She said that with his Irish accent it would have sounded like Nibble.

The 1860 Census source being used has the name spelled "McCarthy". Please delete this comment if it is wrong.

Dates for Billy The Kid

The reason that I have a different birth date is that I based mine on Wikipedia and a letter. (I did have a typo, as well, which related to his parents’ marriage.) The commonly used birth date is actually his baptismal date a few days after his birth, which occurred on 17 SEP 1859.

I see no discrepancies in the dates of death. Billy’s “Pals” died on 19 DEC 1880, some nine months before Billy died on 14 JUL 1881, which is actually controversial, as well.

I’m not sure that McCarty-931 and McCarty-1978 are the same person. The birthdates shown for the two of them are more that 8 years apart.

McCarty-931 was born on November 23, 1859, which is confirmed by:

But McCarty-1978 shows a birthdate that is over 8 years earlier.
