Biography
Pioneer Cass County Man Dies In Oklahoma
William Jackson Matthews (1855-1952) received word of the death of his brother, Miles Irby Matthews (1848-1931), age 85, of Mooreland, Oklahoma, formerly a well known resident of Atlantic, Iowa. Mr. Matthews was one of the early pioneers of Cass county, Iowa.
He was born March 29, 1848 in Indiana and moved with his parents to Hancock, Illinois, when a baby. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Taylor and moved to this county the following year, settling on a farm in Edna township, Cass county, Iowa, where they lived until 1899, when they removed to Mooreland, Oklahoma. They have resided in the Oklahoma city ever since.
Complications of an operation to which he submitted on December 26. 1931 are said to have caused his death.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Amanda (Taylor) Matthews (1852-1932), two sons, Cashius E. Matthews (1874-?) of St. Louis, Missouri, William Floyd Matthews (1895-1951), and one daughter, Mrs. Nora Ellen (Matthews) Phye (1878-1931), both of Mooreland, Oklahoma. One sister and three brothers, one of whom is the local man, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, also survive.
