MARSH FAMILY HISTORY

Robert Marsh was born before 1730 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and died in 1801 in Chatham County, North Carolina.

Robert was in Orange County, North Carolina until it was cut into Chatham County. Robert Marsh, who settled eight miles north of Pittsboro prior to the Revolution "was threatened with 30 lashes a month until he consented to join the Regulators".

Chatham Co., NC Record of Wills, Vol. A, pg 193b NC State Archives film # C.022.80001 Robert Marsh Will dated 14 Mar. 1801

In the name of God Amen, I Robert Marsh of the county of Chatham & State of North Carolina being in perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is apointed for all men once to die, do make & ordain this my last Will & testament. -Vis. Principally & first of all I give & recommend my Soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it me & my body to the earth to be decently buried at discretion. Nothing doubting, but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly estate thereunto it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give demise & dispose of the following manner & form. First I give & bequeath to my "un" married children the Sum of twenty pounds each, North Carolina currency to be paid at their marriage to be raised & levied out of my estate: also I give unto my son Charles Marsh the sum of five Shillings Sterling' and the balance of my estate to be equally divided betwixt the rest of my children John, William, Robert, Joseph, Henry & Alexander my Sons & Elizabeth Brantley, Barbara Griffith, Mary Hackney, Nancy Dilliard, Martha Lambert, Sarah Davis, Frances Taylor, Eliza Stuart, and Henrietta My daughters. And I do hereby constitute make & ordain William Marsh & Daniel Hackney the sole executors of this my last will and testament; And do hereby disannul, revoke & disallow all & every other former testament, Wills legacies bequests & executors by me in any wise before named Will'd bequeathed, ratified & confirmed this & no other to be my last Will & testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & Seal this fourteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & one

Robert Marsh as his last Will & testament in the presence of us who in these presence & in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our names. Research Notes

There has been some confusion between Robert Marsh, III here, and his son Robert Marsh (IV?). Robert Marsh was married to Rachel Stewart and Margaret Kirk, not Robert Marsh III. Robert Marsh died in 1806, his father a few years earlier.

There is a James Robert Marsh 1688 - 1749, m. Hannah Shepard who are listed as Robert Marsh's parents in many spots online but this James and Hannah Marsh were born and died in Connecticut and had no son Robert.

Second (some sources say first) wife Peggy (Margaret?) Hamlett Hackney. More info needed as to which children belong to which mother because no death date for Martha yet and will indicates he did not leave a widow.

Regarding the page 52 entry for 22 Oct 1763. It indicates John Stewart as holding an Orange County, NC, land grant "adjoining William Marsh and Markis." 1763 seems too early for William Head Marsh to hold land. I'm wondering if the land holder William Marsh was the son of Robert Marsh Junior (Marsh-9990), making him the brother of Robert Marsh III (Marsh-536). - Lisa
Possible father for Robert James Marsh, stating he is actually Robert James Marsh III

Marsh-3982 and Marsh-536 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are meant to be the same man but there is some conflation - his name may have been James Robert, but he had sons John AND William AND Robert - John did end up in Kershaw Co. SC and married a woman named Ann Tavner, but it was Robert's son Robert who married Margaret Kirk not this Robert
Marsh-9656 and Marsh-3982 appear to represent the same person because: Same sources referenced (Familysearch profile)--only one Robert Marsh or Mash in Chatham County in 1800 of the right age.
