George Müller was a German-born Christian evangelist who established five homes for orphans on Wilson Street in Bristol, England, educated thousands of children, and spent his last years traveling as a missionary.
Müller described his childhood as wicked and unrepentant. However, in 1825 he attended a prayer meeting. "Everything we have seen on our journey to Switzerland and all of our former pleasures are nothing in comparison with this evening," he wrote in his autobiography.[1] His father had sent him to seminary, hoping he would secure a well paying position but after the prayer meeting George hoped to become a missionary. He stopped lying, stealing and drinking and began preaching in village churches.
In 1829 he began working with a society to promote Christianity among Jews in London. Poor health forced him to leave London. On 7 October 1830, he married Mary Groves (1797 -1870) at Saint David, Exeter, Devon, England.[2] That year he renounced a regular salary and began a life of living by faith.
In 1832 he moved to Bristol where he continued preaching until his death. In 1834 he began the Scriptural Knowledge Institution for Home and Abroad which did not solicit donations. Operating by faith, it supported missionaries, distributed Bibles and tracts and established day schools, adult schools and Sunday schools.
6 Wilson Street, Bristol
In 1836 he and his wife opened their own rented home at 6 Wilson Street, Bristol to take in orphans. In 1849 he built the first orphanage for 300 children. By 1870 1,722 orphans were being cared for in five orphanages. "Every morning after breakfast there was a time of Bible reading and prayer, and every child was given a Bible upon leaving the orphanage, together with a tin trunk containing two changes of clothing. The children were dressed well and educated – Müller even employed an inspector to maintain high standards. In fact, many claimed that nearby factories and mines were unable to obtain enough workers because of his efforts in securing apprenticeships, professional training, and domestic service positions for the children old enough to leave the orphanage."[3]
After the death of his first wife in 1870, he married Susannah Grace Sanger (1817-1894) on 30th November 1875 and they began a 17 year work of missionary travel, still not soliciting donations. He had known Susannah for some twenty-five years and knew that she would be the ideal partner in their ministry. They married just fourteen days after George's daughter, Lydia, married James Wright. Leaving the orphanage ministry in the capable hands of Lydia and James, George and Susannah commenced a programme of missionary speaking tours that took them around the world-wide over seventeen years, to 42 countries, giving more than 5,000 addresses, to an audience estimated at more than trhee million people. Lydia passed away in 1890 and his second wife left him a widower for the second time in January 1895. He preached at her funeral as he had at the first's.
George passed away, aged 92y 5m, on 10 Mar 1898 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. [4] He was buried at Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.[5] Lydia and James Wright continued overseeing the orphanage ministry.
Gravestone Inscription
In Loving Memory of
George Müller
Founder of the Ashley Down Orphanage
Born September 27th 1805
Fell asleep March 10th 1898
He trusted in God with whom
Nothing shall be impossible
And in His beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord
Who said I go unto My Father
And whatsoever ye shall ask in My name
That will I do that the Father
May be glorified in the Son
And in His inspired word which declares that
All things are possible to Him that believeth
And God fulfilled these declarations in
The experience of His servant by enabling
Him to provide and care for about
Ten thousand orphans
This memorial was erected by the
Spontaneous and loving gifts
Of many of these orphans
