Biography
Martha J. King was born on 12 May 1859 in Alabama, United States. She was the daughter of Phillip H. King and Martha Ann (Stokes) King (1835-1913).[1]
Mattie was listed as Martha J. King, age 1 year, on the 1860 United States Census. She was living in the household of Phillip King in Dale County, Alabama in the area served by the Newton Post Office. Relationships were not stated on this census so she was assumed to be Phillip King's daughter.[2]
On the 1870 United States Census, Mattie was listed as M. J. King, age 11, in the household of P. King. No relationships were stated, so she was assumed to be the daughter of P. King. Mattie and her family were living in Dale County, Alabama in the area served by the Rocky Head Post Office.[3]
Martha married William M. Snellgrove in about 1879. The estimated date was based on information in the 1900 and 1910 United States Censuses. They were the parents of at least 8 children.
Mattie was enumerated as the wife of William Snellgrove on the 1880 United States Census. At the time they had one son who was three months old. One of William Snellgrove's cousins, Jeff Snellgrove, was living with them and working as a farm laborer. William Snellgrove was working as a farmer. Their home, located in Dale County, Alabama was very near that of Mattie's parents who were listed on the same census page on the lines just above those of Mattie's family.[4]
When the 1900 United States Census was taken, William and Mattie Snellgrove had seven of their children living in the household. Sometime between 1880 and 1900 Mattie had given birth to another child. The name and details of that child are not known. The Snellgrove family was living in the census area designated as Rocky Head in Dale County, Alabama. Rocky Head has never been incorporated as a town.[5]
Mattie, William, and four of their children were still living in Rocky Head when the 1910 United States Census was taken.[6]
They continued to live in Rocky Head. When the 1920 United States Census was taken, their household was composed of Mattie, William, one widowed daughter and a granddaughter.[7]
Martha J. "Mattie" (King) Snellgrove died on 24 August 1929 in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama at the age of 70.[1] She was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Dale County, Alabama.[8]
