Birth and Residence
Julia was born in 1856 in Chippendale, NSW. She is the daughter of John Jones and Bridget Lyons. Her parents were unmarried. [1]

Residence On 12th July 1865 Julia and her brother John Alexander Jones (age 5) were discharged from the Register of Inmates of Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children. Julia was aged 9 years and both children had been under Child Care and Protection index 1817-1942. The remarks comment is: Alias REGAN Julia. [2] [3]

Residence On 29th February 1866, Julia was discharged a 2nd time from the Register of Inmates of Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children. She was aged 9 years and had been under Child Care and Protection index 1817-1942 along with her little brother Joseph B Jones who was age 3. [4] [5]

Marriage In 1879 she married John Jess in Hartley, New South Wales. [6]

Residence For the year 1879 (Sands Directories: Sydney and New South Wales, Australia, 1858-1933) Julia is listed as the resident of a dwelling in Rose Street, Darlington. [7]

In May 1883 Julia's husband John Jess is the informant cited on the the death registration of her father John (James) William Jones at Pipers Flat in Lithgow, New South Wales, [8] It is presumed that Julia was present at this significant paternal event.

Residence In 1886 Julia can be found in "Sydney", where she last saw her husband John Jess. [9][10] [11] [12]

Residence In December 1891 and January 1892 she was at the post office in Redfern where she issued a total of 4 successive Advertising Notices under the heading Missing Friends to find John Jess who she had last seen "in Sydney" in 1886, because she intended to marry again two weeks from the date of publication. Marriage In 1894, some three years after the first newspaper advertising announcement looking for her husband John Jess, Julia married Henry Edmund Absalom in Sydney, NSW. [13]

Residence In 1902, Julia was involved in a tram collision in Leichardt and at this time she was living in Camperdown, NSW [14]

Death Julia passed away on 16th February 1927 in Belmore, New South Wales [15] [16]

  • Divorce Law in the State of New South Wales
    at the time that Julia put the 3 notices in the Redfern Post Office looking for her husband, had come into operation in the Colony 18 years previously (1873).
    Grounds for divorce or judicial separation were adultery, bigamy, rape, sodomy, bestiality, cruelty or "desertion for at least two years". [18] Luckie-23 02:29, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
