Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins was a dominant drag racing star in the Super Stock and Pro Stock categories in the mid- to late 1970s. He drove a white Chevrolet Camaro called "Grumpy's Toy."
He cultivated the "Grumpy" persona with a cigar in one corner of his mouth, which was probably why he also had the nickname "Jiggs," after the stogie-smoking character in the comic strip "Bringing Up Father" (Bill's great-uncle Horace Evans Jenkins was a cigar maker).
In 1940 he was living with his parents in Philadelphia.
His father, a prominent architect, was murdered in 1951 while Bill was a 19-year-old mechanical engineering student at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
He began racing in the 1950s. His skills in tuning engines were in high demand on the Junior Stock circuit on the East Coast.[2]
He was a member of the National, American and International Hot Rod Associations and was inducted into the National and International Motor Sports Hall of Fame.
