There is no record of when he moved to California. His daughter Natividad and her family moved to Roseville, California, about 1942 so the men in the family could work for the railroad.[6] Since his wife had already died, it is possible Gavino moved there with them. He was living there when he died in 1954.[7]
Research Notes
The 1900 US Census shows a last name of Ortega instead of Hurtado.[4] This was clearly an error on the Census. The family given names match and the house is in the same location as the 1910 Census. The ages are completely wrong, as is the sex of Apolonio so I believe that a non-family member gave the info to the Census taker.
Like many Hurtado's throughout the history of New Mexico, they often used the surname "Urtado." It appears he used Hurtado in New Mexico but changed to Urtado once he moved to California.
