Hilary is off duty presently, so I am answering your questions.
When you add someone to the tree you will get a list of possible profiles that match, you review the list and tick the boxes of those that do not match, you open close matches and revew the details to see if the data matches your data, if it does you click add as to link that profile to your branch of the tree.
1,700 is a large tree WikiTree limits Gedcom imports to 5,000 profiles as with any type of import tool each profile needs to been individually reviewed before the profile is created. I tend to use the wikitree app to import profiles see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:WikiTree_X
To do a basic name search you can use the two name fields at the top of your profile add a first name and surname click the magnify glass /search and you will get a list
Using just a surname Hunter https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Hunter brings up 18194 Hunters or variations of Hunter

This all sounds very good and if I can work out how to create a gedcom that just has my direct ancestors and their siblings in it and excludes any speculative ones I will probably do that. It would be nice to put them somewhere safely where the profiles are actually checked.

I think if you are going to add your tree I would gradually do it to be sure there are no individuals already on the tree if you find someone on the tree with a manager ask to join the trusted list for that profile.
Most people will be happy to change things if there is a good source to support a change. If you should encounter any conflict there are ways to resolve it but you probably will not need to use them.
I have been on here for 10 years and found it to be a very friendly and helpful community. I hope you find the same.
