Biography

Henry was born in 1707. He was the son of John Hunt and Margaret Bowles. He passed away in late September 1796 in Glasnevin.

NOTE: Contra Burke’s Landed Gentry 1912 solid evidence points to the wife of this Henry Hunt being Elizabeth Kiernan rather than Grace Forsyth. She will be added with notes on the proof soon

Henry became a distinguished apothecary, became Ireland's first State Apothecary in 1784 and the first Governor of Apothecaries' Hall in Dublin by Act of Parliament in 1791 at the "tender age" of 84 years old. He remained Governor until his death in 1796.

A State Apothecary was the one who would be called if any distinguished visitor's to Ireland fell ill - thus giving him considerably more credence among the general populace.

The Apothecaries' Hall became the first formal organization involved in training, licensing and regulating the medical profession.

Additionally, Henry served as Warden at St. John's COI 1760-1761 (unusual to have a two year term) and rented accommodation during his earliest Dublin operations at Fishamble Street to Nicolò Pasquali, Italian composer and musician during his time in Dublin. This included charity performances for debtor prisoners.

Patalineal Lineage

Henry , son of John "of Glangoole", the son of Captain Vere, the son of Henry and Lady Jane de Vere in Burke's landed genetry on the Hunts of Cummer More.

DNA Y Triangulation to Captain Vere Hunt [3]

Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. -->Lloyd (Hunt) de Vere Hunt, FTDNA kit #B231134 and his 6th cousin twice removed, Thomas Hunt, FTDNA kit #?????, match at a Genetic Distance of 3 of 37 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA John of Glangoole Hunt. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 6 generations is 53.98% and within the last 7 generations is 63.58%.

FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 57.04%

In terms of overall proof, documentary proof is solid showing full continuity of family and two have an autosomal match as well as other family autosomal matches which have only possible link with the male line of this family

Henry was the first State Apothecary appointed in 1783 for a term that began in 1784 and by Act of Parliament became the first Governor of Apothecaries' Hall in 1791, rare in that is one of the organizations that still is in existence and thriving today. [5]

The term State Apothecary provides incontrovertible proof of the continuity of the line from Curragh Chase from father John and mother Margaret Bowles as noted in the Hunts of Cummer More section as the father in law of James Kearney and in the Kearney reference to the same marriage, it refers to his title. see Burke's Landed Gentry

He seems to have been in no hurry to leave Curragh Chase, emerging in 1742 in his marriage to Elizabeth Kiernan, George

Earlier in his career, Henry worked in this field with businessman Edward Croker and his nephew George Kiernan who also takes on this title in 1819, after his son and my fourth great grandfather Hunt-13222, Henry's successor passed away. Prior to that Kiernan is noted as coming from S. Anne Street, where either brother or father John is noted as practicing in 1783 on 8 South Anne Street.

Evidently, Kiernan showed his particular gratitude in a letter summarized below with the promise that his title would go to Henry's grandson, Thomas as it did by 1832.

'Letter from George Kiernan, Henry Street, Dublin, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, expressing thanks to Earl Talbot Lord Lieutenant, for appointing him as State Apothecary. States that when Thomas Hunt comes of age, Kiernan will return the warrant, 'in order that it may be cancelled, & a joint appointment made out for me and Mr Hunt'. [6]

It seems most probable that John Shortt is a related. See Research Notes.

We are currently working on the "wives" of Henry.

While Burke's attributed motherhood of Susanna, James and Charles to this Grace Forsyth in 1747, certainly Susanna's mother is Elizabeth Kiernan married a Henry Hunt 1742, if not the boys as well. See Burke's for unusual positioning of the entry.

Proof of this is found in almost 75 years of Dublin Apothecary history, relationships, Charles Davys' will and that his nephew and partner was George Kiernan and George's brother or father, John had an apothecary outlet on S. Anne Street, where he also had originated before joining Uncle Henry.

There is no other trace of Grace Forsyth either by birth or marriage anywhere else in records that we have found so far, including the Forsyth genealogists, or of Grace Hunt.

Either she is the mother of one of the boys or an unfortunate editorial add on or mish mash

Additionally, there is a fourth son as yet no name, as his daughter in law is attributed to marry a second time - Suggestion of a name is Charles of King Street.
