John Benjamin Haviland was born on 30 March 1862, in Windham, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada to Joseph Bates Haviland and Mary Catherine Wade. He married Martha Jane Birdsill on 20 May 1887, in Windham, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Detroit Ward 14, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan in 1910 and Detroit Ward 10, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan in 1920. He died on 17 November 1929, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States, at the age of 67 and was buried in Section 18 of Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Oakland County, Michigan,
