Biography

Of Margaretha we know that she was born about 1575 probably at Zwolle (because it's mentioned she is from a family from Zwolle and because when she died in 1625 it was mentioned she was 50 years old.) This means she probably was about ten years older than second husband Balthasar ; a remarkable difference in age . The most obvious reason for this most likely is Margaretha's descent. She originated of a family from Zwolle, who acquired around 1600 prestige and prosperity. Maybe Balthasar came in contact with Margaretha trough a family member, named Pelegromius Hardenstein, who at the same time studied in Franeker.[1][2]

Marriages

  1. before 1607 she married Peter Monches, she is mentioned as widow of a certain Peter Monches (also called Monchovius ), pastor of Parrega. [2]
  2. On 18 APril, 1607 in Zwolle she married Balthasar Joannis (Stuyvesant)[2]
    Transcript Marriage Zwolle:
Aprilis ao 1607. Baltesar Joannis van Doccum ende Margareta Hardensteins s. Petri Monei gewesen dinnaer des godlicken w. tot Paraga n.l.v.[3]

Children

From the second marriage [2]
  1. Pieter (ca 1611)
  2. Anna ( 1613)

Death

The expert in the field of old gravestones in Friesland, Hessel de Walle, 'discovered' during the recent Frisian Tsjerkepaad (church path= a television program) a tombstone in the church of Berlikum about which little was known until that moment. It is the gravestone of Pieter Stuyvesant's mother, her son Pieter was the former governor of New Amsterdam, later New York. She died in 1625 when Pieter's father, Balthasar (born in Dokkum) , was pastor in the local church, where he was appointed in 1622. Pieter must have been about 14 years of age at that time.
The gravestone in the Koepelkerk (Dome Church) on Tsjerkestrjitte 2 in Berlikum is well preserved and recently reappeared from under the wooden floor. It contains the following text (with Latin verse):

Ao 1625 den 2 maij sterf d eerbare Margareta Hardenstein out 50 iaren en was d echte huisvrouwe va Balthasar Stuijfsant, i chr dienaer in sijn gemeinte toe Belcum.
Nascentes morimur, morientes vivimus, illud
Intulit alter Adam, hoc contulit alter Adam
Christe veni, vidi, vince tuis, tibi vincere morti
Mortuus ut poteras, mortem ab olendus ades
Sic rubra terra siam macula sire idayyalos [met Griekse letters], et fir
Mors iurrosa mihi, vitaque Christe sies

Reburied in Doesburg ?

There is one burial of an Unknown Hardenstein on 13 September, 1625 in Doesburg: It says : The 13th September, 1625 Frouw (Miss/Lady) Hardenstein has her grave opened (or the family grave/tomb (?) for (the burial of) her daughter, for which she payed 2-5
original txt: Den 13 Sept.1625 frouw Hardensteins laeten apenen haer groeff voer haer dochter daarvan betaelt 2-5
Gebeurtenis: Begraven Datum: zaterdag 13 september 1625 Overledene: nn Hardenstein Religie: Burgerlijke gemeente Gebeurtenisplaats: Doesburg[7]
Perhaps she was reburied on 13 September 1625 in a familytomb or grave ?
Pieters father in 1627 remarries and perhaps left Berlikum short after her death (?), so perhaps her mother was the one who payed for the opening of her grave (because the opening of this grave was payed by mother Froue Hardenstein for the burial of her daughter)

Hi Linda,

I added some info about her death and perhaps a reburial (?) Could you check and rephrase it if it can or needs to be ? Was struggling with how to say it in English a bit , so maybe it's not how it should be exactly ...

Thanks for the help it's of course very much appreciated :)
