Biography
Francis Davis was born in 1754 in Amesbury, part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, to parents Gideon Davis and Elizabeth (Hoit/Hoyt) Davis.[1]
Their eight children were:
- Hannah Davis Foster, 1781-1857
- William Foster Davis, 1783–1861
- Eliza Davis Whitcomb, 1785–1820
- Judith Davis (1st), 1787-? (died in infancy)
- Susannah Davis, 1790-? (probably died in infancy)
- Anna Davis, 1792–? (probably died in infancy)
- Francis Davis (Jr.), 1795–1872
- Judith Davis (2nd) Hoyt, 1796–1842
Prior to the wedding, in 1777, he served in the Revolutionary War in New Hampshire as a member of Wimons Regiment. After their marriage, Francis and Judith settled in the Warner, Merrimack, New Hampshire area, along with Francis's elderly widowed mother. Francis died suddenly in 1797, aged 42, and his mother died later that year. His widow Judith and oldest son William Foster Davis were left to care for the family.[2]
