Biography

Unknown Crawford was born 1802 to 1808. [1][2]

Research Notes

Some ancestry trees believe Unknown Crawford and A.N. Powers had a son John Powers, born in 1820 in Tennessee. No source hs been found to support this child.

Ancestry Trees say John Powers was the son of Arthur Nathaniel Powers and Lucinda L.T. Dowdy (obviously wrong mother since she married A.N. Powers in 1845).

Ancestry trees say John Powers: Married Elizabeth Knight 11 Feb 1839, in Stewart County, Tennessee: "Tennessee, County Marriages, 1790-1950," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q281-XP2B : 2 May 2023), John Powers and Elizabeth Knight, 11 Feb 1839; citing Stewart, Tennessee, United States, Marriage, p. , Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville and county clerk offices from various counties; FHL microfilm 24,834.

NOTE: Arthur Nathaniel Power's family was in Stewart and Montgomery County during the time of this marriage. In fact, A.N. Powers' married his second wife in Stewart County in 1842.

1820 Richmond CO NC Census

Does the 1820 Census Record leave room for the attached "Unknown Crawford" daughter of Masten Duke Crawford, who may have married Arthur Nathaniel Powers? Current WikiTree records say yes. More facts are needed McReynolds-216 02:01, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

    • 2 daughters under 10 are Julia Benton Crawford b 1814 and Mary Duke Crawford Holmes b 1816
    • 2 daughters 10 to 16 are Ann P Crawford born 1803 and Elizabeth Sands Crawford Rush b 1809
    • Have not found the missing 5th daughter shown in 1820 census as born 1810 – 1820 NOTE: If Elizabeth Sands Crawford Rush was born in 1810 instead of 1809, the missing 5th daughter would be born 1804-1810.
    • Ancestry trees say M.D. Crawford also had a daughter Mary Elizabeth Betty Crawford (1799 – 1883) who is likely Mary Elizabeth (Crawford) Parsons who married in 1816 and moved to SC shortly after her marriage.

DOB for the Unknown Crawford daugher

The missing 5th daughter in the 1820 Census of M.D. Crawford and Charlotte Covington could have been in the census birth year categories 1804-1810 or 1810-1820. (see discussion above) Some have establised her DOB as early as 1800 because they assumed she had a son named John Powers in 1820. However, I've found no reliable sources for this son.

NC Records from early 1800s that tie Crawfords to Powers

  • Arthur Powers, brother of Barnabas Powers, and uncle to Arthur N Powers, served on a Jury with Mastin Crawford. in 1806, as shown by in Minutes of Richmond County Court, NC, 1804 – 1808, Microfilmed by NC Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, NC; Also listed on those pages are Ana, Rachel, Peter and Benjamin Covington. Family Search - North Carolina, County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions (Richmond County). Film #008189348, Image 741, June 11, 1806. • 1790 US Census shows widow Rebecca (Covington) Crawford on the same census page as William Newberry Jr., brother-in-law of Barnabus Powers, who is the father of Arthur Nathaniel Powers. "United States Census, 1790", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHK1-L8N : Sun Mar 10 21:58:40 UTC 2024), Entry for Rebecca Crawford, 1790. Household has 4 white males under 16 years, 1 white male over 16 years, 2 white females with 12 total.

  1. See Research Notes:Possible son named John Powers born circa 1820. FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q281-XP2B : 2 May 2023), John Powers and Elizabeth Knight, 11 Feb 1839; citing Stewart, Tennessee, United States, Marriage, p. , Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville and county clerk offices from various counties; FHL microfilm 24,834.
  2. More on John Powers as a potential possible son: Arthur Nathaniel Power's family was in Stewart and Montgomery County during the time of this 1839 marriage of John Powers. In fact, A.N. Powers married his second wife in Stewart County in 1842.
  • Name of Unknown Wife of Arthur Powers - Mastin Duke Crawford, father of this unknown wife, had several daughters. Julia was the oldest and the least known about, that is why I chose her to be Arthur's first wife. DNA proves that the mother of Arthur's children was a daughter of Mastin Duke Crawford and Charlotte Covington, and the granddaughter of Thomas Crawford Sr and Rebecca Covington, and the great granddaughter of John Crawford and Margaret Mastin.

[Julia Benton Crawford is well documented and known to have married Walter Raleigh Leak, another well documented profile and line. DNA cannot make the proofs asserted by the manager of this profile as written.]

  • Birth - On the 1830 and 1840 US Census, she was listed 30-39, on both census. The 1830 census for 30-39 would put her birth between 1791 and 1800. The 1840 census would put her birth between 1801-1810. If it was not a recording error, then her birth was probably around 1800-1801, and depending on the month that the census was taken, she could be correctly recorded as being 30-39 on both census records. Considering, she gave birth to her first child in Nov 1825, she was probably born closer to 1800 than 1810.
  • Marriage - Her first child, Mary Ann, was born on 24 Nov 1825, according to the family bible, which would put the conception in Feb 1825.
  • Death and Death Location - Arthur remarried on 2 Feb 1842. Arthur was living in Montgomery County TN on the 1840 Census and he remarried in Stewart Co Tn in 1842. Her death location was either Montgomery or Stewart Co TN.

I've received help from a WikiTree DNA specialist, concerning how to approach this profile and the DNA testing of J. Williams. I'll provide both J. Williams and Leake Little more details soon. But the first step is to remove the parents currently associated with this profile and instead create a space page and write out a DNA proof argument using anonymized names for her DNA matches to start to lay out why she believes these families are related. To use DNA this far back on the tree for proof requires a lot of work, not just a few of DNA matches and the genealogy needs to be in place before the DNA is used as a supplement.

The only child of this "unknown" Crawford spouse to Powers that exhibits name coherence (with the NC line) is that of Mastin Crawford Powers. All of the other names are not typical or even used among the extended NC Crawford line. I suspect that this was an honorific use - and not actually related to the Crawford family at all. It was typical that enlisted men who survived war would name a male child for their commanding officer out of respect. That might have happened in this case though I don't know for certain.

Hi Leake,

I'm going to restore the parents to this profile. It helps those of us trying to establish relationships to be able to see the profiles together. Please do not remove them until after we've finished our research. (It might take a few weeks.) We'll definitely keep you in the loop.

ok, but I'm directly descended from the two documented daughters (Mary Elizabeth C. Parsons and Julia Benton C. Leak), as well as the daughter of the documented son Thomas A. Crawford. These siblings are my ggg-grandmothers and gg-grandmother respectively. It's odd that I would not be directly involved in the research during this review.

I certainly don't want to leave you out. At this point J. Williams and I are just looking for reliable sources, not really drawing conclusions. I would love it if you joined in too. I just posted some census records to the profile for Thomas A. Crawford and hope you can take a look at them. Many of the profiles we're looking at don't have census records posted and I find them to be very helpful doing research of this nature. I noticed in the 1820 census record for Thomas A. Crawford (on page 186) that he is near Barnabus Powers (on page 184). William Crawford is also on page 186, but I haven't posted anything to his profile yet.

Let me know if you have questions.

I'm curious to know more about the following:

"DNA proves that the mother of Arthur's children was a daughter of Mastin Duke Crawford and Charlotte Covington, and the granddaughter of Thomas Crawford Sr and Rebecca Covington, and the great granddaughter of John Crawford and Margaret Mastin."

How does DNA prove this? What DNA results are you using? What testing has been done and by whom to arrive at these conclusions please?

Ancestry DNA. Full DNA matches Mastin Duke Crawford and Charlotte Covington and their children Ann, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary and Mastin. Full DNA matches to Thomas Crawford and Rebecca Crawford and their children Nancy, Thomas and John.

Impossible - these folks are all dead. Julia married my gg-grandfather Walter Raleigh Leak. We have documented lines through the Richmond County Historical Society. I suggest you try to document this person through traditional paper-based research before you assert anymore DNA claims.
