James Adams Clarkson III was the son of James Adams Clarkson Jr. and Kate Alice Anderson. He graduated from Lower Richland High School and attended the University of South Carolina before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 where he served during World War II. He retired from the United States Air Force Reserve with the rank of major in 1968.
In 1943 he married Florence Duma Harris. They had four children. In 1952 they co-founded Clarkson Custom Kitchens. The business evolved as Kitchen Distributing Company into one of the more successful wholesale appliance distributors of its type. They retired in 1982 to their mountain home in Bat Cave, North Carolina. During the 22 years they lived in Bat Cave, he was an honorary member of the Bat Cave Volunteer Fire Department. They were members of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard in Columbia.
