Biography
Joseph Clarke (1776-1822) was among the youngest of 15 children of Joseph Clarke and Sarah Pendleton. He was apprenticed as a tailor to Ethan Stillman in Rhode Island. He removed to Brookfield, NY near the Unadilla River, settling finally on a farm just east of Leonardsville, NY. Besides tailoring, he was church choirmaster and gave voice lessons. He was a member and Trustee of First Sabbatarian Church of Brookfield, NY.
He married a third cousin Hannah Clarke and by her had 8 children. Their first child Sophia was born at Plainfield, NY Feb. 6, 1802.
