William was born in 1854, the son of William Ash and Charlotte Hurd.[1] His certificate gives the birth date as 26 Aug 1854 in Buckland Monachorum, the same place his mother Charlotte was living in 1861.[2]
On May 3rd of 1855, with his mother Charlotte, W H Ash, boarded the The Barque John at Plymouth. The immigrant ship was headed for Canada. His father was not with them and presumably had travelled ahead. Tragically the ship was crashed on the Manacles on the Cornwall coast near St Keverne late that night. William and his mother were washed overboard and drowned, along with many other passengers. They were listed among the drowned or missing in the Royal Cornwall Gazette.[3]
