Martin Andreasen, son of Andreas Olsen and Marie Johanesdatter, was born at Negaardeie in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway on 18 Mar 1879 and he was baptized at Ås church on 15 Jun 1879.[1] His family emigrated to the United States in 1882, settling in La Crosse, Wisconsin. They adopted Andreas' surname Olsen, anglicized to Olson once they settled. By 1900, his mother was a widow and they were living in the city of La Crosse.[2] Martin married Ida Indahl at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse on 14 Nov 1903.[3] Martin and Ida lived together in La Crosse.[4][5][6][7] Martin died on 19 Dec 1936 and he was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.[8]
Research Notes
Both his naturalization papers from 1923[9] and his obituary from the The La Crosse Tribune that appeared on page 06 on Monday, 21 Dec 1936 state he was born in Gjøvik. The municipality of Gjøvik is just north of Vestre Toten where Martin and his brothers were baptized at the Aas/Ås parish church. It is possible the farm they were living on was nearer to Gjøvik but they were baptized at Aas.
