Walter died on January 5, 1953 in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was buried at Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
He married Edith Mae Mathis December 26, 1900 in Leeds Point, New Jersey, daughter of John Mathis and Bessie Souder.
In the 1900 census Walter is listed as an Oyster Skipper (Skipper was the name for a captain of a ship). That must have been at the time he was a partner in the oyster business with John Frank Mathis. Walter was a salesman for his brother-in-laaw, Alfred Harris, in the tobacco and confectionary business in Atlantic County. There is a picture of the truck he drove on his rounds in this book. He later was Superintendent of the county Farms in Atlantic County. States use to have these farms called "poor farms" where people who had no jobs nor money could live and work on the farm for their keep. In 1926 Walter and Edith decided to buy a farm in Cecil County, Maryland. In 1939, a team of horses pulling a grain drill got spooked and in trying to stop them Walter slipped and fell. The drill ran over one side of his body breaking every bone, often multiple breaks. He was hospiltalized in Baltimore for several weeks and was not expected to live. He could no longer farm, so they sold the farm and moved to Oxford, PA. When Edith took in women boarders he did not want to stay there so went to live with his son Maurice and his wife Loretta in Pleasant Hill Maryland and helped to manage their store while Maurice was away at war during WWII. the store was a good business. When Maurice returned from overseas they bought the building and land from Loretta's father. When he became ill in 1951 he went to live with his daughter, Percis, in Atlantic City. Loretta had just given birth to twin girls (Karen and Sharon) and had 4 other children and she was unable to care for a sick man. Maurice and Loretta had also sold the store and moved to Glasgow, Delaware.
