Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Beatrice (Adams) Bellamy is a part of US Black heritage.

Beatrice was born in Lindale, Texas to Commie Adams and Ruby Bell. She lived there till she graduated from high school and moved to Pinal and Pima Counties in Arizona. She had relatives in Pinal County.

She married Asker Juniel and together they had 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl). The family lived in Tucson, Arizona.

The marriage ended in divorce in 1976 and after that she married a technical sergeant in the Air Force named Vernon Bellamy. During courtship, the two didn't know that they had a baby on the way. They got married in California in June 13, 1977 and found out about this unexpected pregnancy around August or September of that year. On December 14, a baby girl was born and was named Eileen.

During her adult life, she worked for the Tucson Unified School District as a truant officer till 1990 and hall monitor at Tucson High School till her death. She made the decision to put her youngest daughter into private school so that can get an excellent education and succeed. Her previous children all graduated from Tucson High School. She was well known and influential in Tucson and was involved with the Tucson Education Association and the Pima County Democrat Party. She was raised Baptist and attended Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Tucson when she could have the time.

She worked night shifts in the summer months and weekends (personal care aide in a group home) to pay for Eileen's private school tuition. That is dedication and beautiful acts of mercy.

Her health was stable until 1992. Her youngest daughter noticed that her legs were swollen and started having heel spurs. After she fainted at home, Beatrice was taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson during the Super Bowl weekend of late January 1993.

She was on comfort cares at home during the Super Bowl. Unknown to the family, she had a Pulmonary Embolism that was not detected by primary care providers. She passed away the next day on February 1, 1993 from Deep Vein Thrombosis according to the death records of Pima County. She was buried in East Lawn Palms Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona on the first weekend of February 1993.

Everyone continues to be curious about why Beatrice wanted the front door open. According to her daughter, Eileen Bellamy Robinson, "She wanted her guardian angel to find her and take her home."

30 years later, her influence still is embedded in the minds of relatives and friends.
